Study Abroad Tuberculosis Information

  • Pre-departure screening: Student Health Services (SHS) strongly recommends that all KU students traveling to areas with high incidences of TB consider pre-departure screening. Make an appointment with our Travel Health Clinic and we can help you to determine your travel health needs.
  • Preventive measures for travelers: Travelers should avoid exposure to known TB patients in crowded environments (such as hospitals, prisons or homeless shelters). Travelers who will be working in hospitals or health care settings where TB patients are likely to be encountered should consult infection control or occupational health experts about procedures for obtaining personal respiratory protective devices, along with respirator selection and training.
  • Post travel TB Testing: If you visited areas with high incidences of TB, SHS strongly recommends that you take a post travel TB test 8 weeks after returning from travel. Make an appointment online or call (785) 864-9507. If, upon your return, you are no longer a KU student, see your personal physician or local health department for testing.
