Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Vaccine

Gardasil is a new vaccine that protects against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), the virus which causes genital warts, abnormal pap smears, and cervical cancer. It was approved by the FDA in June, and is recommended for girls and women ages 9-26. There are many types of HPV viruses, which is the most common sexually transmitted infection, affecting about 50% of sexually active men and women. The vaccine protects against 4 types of the virus, the two types that cause most cases of cervical cancer, and the two types that cause most cases of genital warts.

Student Health Services participated in the original research that led to approval of the vaccine, and is one of the first places in the area to offer the vaccine. For more information on the vaccine, please visit http://www.cdc.gov/std/HPV/STDFact-HPV-vaccine.htm, or call for an appointment with one of our gynecology nurses. To receive the vaccine, please call for an appointment at our immunization clinic. Appointments are available by calling 864-9500.
